As I was going up Pippen Hill
Nursery Rhyme
Lyrics, Origins and History

As I was going up Pippen Hill,
Pippen Hill was dirty.
There I met a pretty miss
And she dropt me a curtsey.

Little miss, pretty miss,
Blessings light upon you!
If I had half a crown a day,
I'd spend it gladly on you

We had not been able to trace any reference to a 'Pippen Hill' in Britain - its original location was a mystery. However, our grateful thanks go to Paul Jones who has provided us with the following information:

I was reading my ancestors personal journal and he mentioned the following:

October 19 - Tuesday. Went on foot thru a rural district five miles to Old Stoudge [Old Storridge]. Preached at the house of Elder Meeks. Meeting well attended.

October 20 - Wednesday. Went about 7 miles to Pipin Hill, preached at the house of Bro. Johnson to a crowded room.

So, I think that Pippen Hill is about 7 miles from Old Storridge which is near Malvern in Worcestershire.

Paul, like us, could not find the exact location of Pippen Hill but at least we now know the general vicinity. Thank you Paul for sharing the contents of your ancestor's journal.

A typical English countryside scene of circa 1850
